If you lived in China a thousand years ago a tea made from a flowering plant called Artemisia annua (the plant contains a compound called artemisinin) might have been your treatment in case you had a fever, inflammation, or malaria. It’s the basis for a malaria drug called artesunate that doctors prescribe nowadays.

Facing serious illnesses like oncology requires an integrative approach to fight this complex disease. Cancer cells often become resistant to most chemotherapy drugs, with artemisinin that doesn’t seem to happen. Artemisinin isn’t toxic and it’s also cheap and easy to give, unlike many cancer treatments.

Artemisinin in conjunction should be considered using integratively with normal cancer care, not as an alternative. Artesunate represents a semisynthetic derivative of artemisinin that has improved water solubility. Thus it crosses the blood-brain barrier better than artemisinin. Artemisinin is a hormone balancer, particularly for example it reduces excess estrogen and prolactin in Breast Cancer.

What could it do in the treatment process?

Artemisinin is activated by ionic ferrous iron, which cancer cells accumulate. Iron is an essential cofactor for cancer cell proliferation. Most cancer cells have high rates of iron intake and express a high concentration of transferrin receptors on the cell surface. The rapid growth of abnormal cells sequesters relatively large amounts of iron mainly in the form of holotransferrin.

Dihydro-artemisinin has a peroxide bond activated by iron to generate hydrogen peroxide. This free radical of oxygen stress cancer cells, which are always deficient in peroxide-neutralizing catalase enzyme. Normal cells with catalase can harmlessly dissipate the peroxides. Cancer cells are approximately 100 times more susceptible to dying from artemisinin than healthy cells. In cancer cells the high-valent oxo-iron species create a cascade of endoperoxides, depolarizing the mitochondrial membranes and disrupting the electron transport chain.

Downregulation of nuclear factor kappa B, the master control gene for inflammation. A sign of intense inflammation in the cancer cell is high blood levels of CRP and ESR, and also mid-to-high-normal LDH. These markers suggest which patients are good candidates for artemisinin therapy.

Regulates p53 DNA repair gene and cyclin-dependent kinases.

Modulates important epigenetics or DNA silencing, including methylation and histone protein acetylation.

Inhibits angiogenesis, disrupting the blood supply to tumors.

Target translationally controlled tumor protein TCTP.

Inhibits cysteine protease enzyme, and also a SERCA-type calcium transporter enzyme.

Induces apoptosis and slows growth in cancers such as fibrosarcoma, lymphoma, breast, pancreatic, esophageal, prostate, and ovarian/fallopian/peritoneal carcinomas.

Efficacious for squamous cell carcinomas and liver hepatocellular cancer, and also for any liver metastases from primaries. TCM doctors say it is best for “hot” cancers and less benefit in the “metal element” cancers of the colon or lung ARTESUNATE.

It can improve survival and QOL in stage 4 cancers.

Artesunate promotes ferritin degradation and reacts with lysosomal iron and copper to generate an intracellular burst of reactive oxygen species and extracellular peroxides.

IV Artesunate is highly synergistic with IV Vitamin C, which is a pro-oxidative which amplifies peroxide stress, and to which you may add Mistletoe therapy.

What would be the impact of the artesunate on cancer cells when integrated into the cancer therapy plan?

Some research has been done to assess the benefits of artesunate when combines with the primary cancer care, not as an alternative.
So far, based on various studies, experts are optimistic about its potential role as a treatment for some types of cancer, including:

Colorectal. In a study of 20 patients with colon cancer, 9 were treated with artesunate while the rest were not. Those that received artesunate saw 12% more of their cancer cells die than those who didn’t.

Lung cancer. Researchers followed 120 cases of advanced non-small-cell lung cancer. Patients treated with a combination of artesunate and conventional therapy saw their cancer progress more slowly than those in the second group who didn’t have this combination.

Advanced cervical cancer: Doctors treated 10 women with a form of artemisinin for 28 days. All 10 went into remission and saw symptoms like pain and vaginal discharge go away.
